A Message from the President & CEO

Dear Little League Alberta Coaches and Volunteers,

I hope this message finds you in great spirits and eager for the exciting summer season ahead. On behalf of the Board of Directors at Little League Alberta, it is my great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to the 2027 Summer Ball season!

As the President and CEO of Little League Alberta, I am both thrilled and honored to be part of this remarkable journey with you. Our mission continues to be to provide a safe, fun, and enriching experience for all our young athletes. The spirit of Little League is about more than just baseball and softball; it’s about building character, fostering teamwork, and creating lasting memories for our children.

This summer, we are committed to making the season as enjoyable and rewarding as possible. From our talented players and dedicated coaches to our invaluable volunteers and supportive families, everyone plays a crucial role in making this league a success.

1. Safety First: The well-being of our players, coaches, and families is our top priority. We will continue to follow all recommended health and safety guidelines to ensure a safe environment for everyone.
2. Communication: Please stay connected with your local league and District Summer Ball Coordinators for updates on schedules, events, and any changes that may arise. All changes will be communicated through the Google Sheet environment as outlined in this document.
3. Volunteers Needed: We rely heavily on the support of volunteers to help manage games, coordinate events, and maintain our fields. If you are interested in getting more involved, please reach out to your local league coordinator.
4. Respect and Sportsmanship: Let’s remember that the core values of Little League include respect, integrity, and sportsmanship. Encouraging positive behavior on and off the field helps create a supportive and inclusive environment for all.

Please note that this document is broken out into two distinct sections — the Alberta Divisional Tournament Details, and the Summer Travel Baseball League. If you have a team, or teams, preparing to go down the Little League World Series tournament path, pay attention to the Divisional Tournament Details section. If your team or teams are participating in our Summer Travel Baseball League, pay attention to that section of this document.

Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication to Little League Alberta. Here’s to a fantastic summer of baseball and softball!

Warm regards,
Kevin Kvame
President and CEO, Little League Alberta

Summer Travel Baseball Site Confirmations

Work with your District Summer Ball Coordinator to track whether you are signed up to participate in any of the Summer Ball weeks via the 2027 Participation Verification Sheet, also available via the 2027 Summer Travel Ball Google Drive.

Summer Travel Baseball Age Groups Available

Summer Travel Baseball offers players an exciting opportunity to compete at a higher level and showcase their skills on a broader stage. The league caters to age groups ranging from 9 to 16 years old. Teams are divided by age to ensure fair competition and developmentally appropriate challenges.

All ages noted below follow the 2027 Little League Baseball Age Charts.

Minors Age Group

Open for all players between the League Ages of 8 to 10. The Minors age group will have AAA, AA and A level leagues for the 2027 season. For the Minors A division, League Age 7 players may be included on your team should you feel they are capable of competing at that level of baseball.

Majors Age Group

Open for all players between the League Ages of 10 to 12 years old.

Teenage Age Group

Teenage-Juniors: open for all players between the League Ages of 13 and 14 years old only — absolutely no exemptions will be provided for players over the League Age of 14. Preference is to play Teenage Juniors games on a 54/80 diamond.

Teenage-Seniors: open for all players between the ages of 14 to 16 years old. You may allow 13-year-olds to play on your team in the Teenage Seniors age group should you feel they are capable of playing at that level of baseball. Note: Little League Alberta has removed the average age requirement for the Teenage Seniors age group. Preference is to play Teenage Seniors games on a 60/90 diamond.

Note: not all hosts may have the preferred diamond size as noted above. Games shall be allowed in the Teenage Juniors and Teenage Seniors divisions based upon host diamond availability. Hosts are asked to communicate this in advance.

Note: should a Seniors age group team not be performing at a competitive level after 3 weeks of participation, they may apply for an exemption to be moved to the Juniors age group, to the President and CEO of Little League Alberta.

Remember: the goal is for teams to play at a level that encourages development and level competition as much as possible!

Summer Travel Baseball Policies

1. Participation Requirements

Any league from an Alberta or Saskatchewan Little League District in good standing may register team(s) through the Little League Alberta office. Leagues may accept additional players who register with the league and are selected to a team even if they did not meet the minimum requirements in 2027. All players MUST have participated in their respective league’s spring season to be eligible for the Little League Alberta Summer Travel Baseball League.

Alberta teams: all Little League Alberta registered teams MUST compete in a minimum of 4 total weekends in order to be eligible for the Championship Weekend. Little League Alberta reserves the right to provide exemptions by allowing alternative events to count as 1 of those weekends, so long as that event is approved prior to July 4, 2027.

Saskatchewan teams: all Saskatchewan Little League registered teams must compete in a minimum of 2 total weekends in Alberta-based events and a minimum of 1 approved Saskatchewan event in order to be eligible for the Championship Weekend. For any non-Summer Ball hosted event to be considered as an approved event, it must be pre-approved by Little League Alberta no later than July 4, 2027.

Western Frontier Baseball teams: WFB teams must compete in a minimum of 2 weekends in Summer Ball and 2 weekends in WFB play as a minimum to qualify for championships as outlined in item 6.

2. Fees and Refunds — Team Costs

Once a team has registered, the registration fee is due and there are no refunds.

  • Register by June 8, 2027 — $495 per team, payment due no later than June 15, 2027.
  • Late register by June 13, 2027 — $545 per team, payment due no later than June 20, 2027.
  • Final registration cut-off by June 20, 2027 — $625 per team, due immediately.

Registration fees cover all logistical, administrative and financial support, including entry into a Sectional Championship Weekend tournament hosted by Little League Alberta or Saskatchewan Little League. Little League Alberta will provide a Championship Sectional Banner to the winning team and awards to champions and runners-up.

a. Additional expenses — game fees/umpires: you will be billed an additional game fee per game scheduled for your teams. Each team pays half the cost of the umpires for all games they participate in. For two umpires per game, the per-game rates are:

  • Minors — $45 per game per team ($90 total)
  • Majors — $50 per game per team ($100 total)
  • Teenage Junior or Teenage Senior — $65 per game per team ($130 total)

b. Fines and penalties: there will be a $500 fine to your league if one of your teams commits to participating in a weekend and drops out after the cut-off date. If necessary, pick up players for your regular season Summer Ball weekends from your league’s spring season teams (same or lower age bracket), or borrow a player from the same division of another league. This does not apply to Championship Weekend.

3. League/Combined Team Options

Leagues are encouraged, as needed, to form combined teams with other leagues to ensure players receive an opportunity to play at the level most commensurate with their skill.

All-girls combined teams: districts (or a group of leagues in the same district) are encouraged to form all-girls team options for participation in the Summer Travel Baseball program. All-girls teams must adhere to the age restrictions for each division. Where all-girls teams participate in the same weekends of play, all efforts will be made to schedule all-girls specific games.

4. Moving Up or Down a Division

After weeks 3 and 4, Little League Alberta shall evaluate whether teams should move up or down a division to ensure they are participating at the proper competitive level. Requests to move up or down will be entertained via email at info@llabsumerball.ca by July 7, 2027. Teams will be required to participate in a minimum of 2 weeks at the new competitive level.

As noted above, any Senior Division team may apply for a waiver to move down to the Juniors Division after 3 weeks of participation if they are not competitive in their proper division.

5. Schedules

All regular season weekend schedules will be coordinated by the host league, the District Summer Travel Ball Coordinator and Little League Alberta. Teams will be placed in events according to the Summer Travel Ball Google Drive. Teams should allow at least 4 games per team each weekend, unless a Minor or Major A team requests only 3. The goal is 3–6 team weekends. Each host is strongly encouraged to look back at previous weeks to give teams that have not played each other a chance to play.

Championship Weekend schedules will be created by Little League Alberta, coordinating with the host league and the District Summer Ball Coordinator, with seeding based on the six-week season. If different championship tiers are held in different locations, tiers will be defined using results up to and including Week 5, with seeding making best efforts to take all results up to and including Week 6.

A minimum of 1 coach per Summer Travel Baseball team will be required to participate in a Positive Coaching Alliance virtual course — more details will be provided closer to the season. A mandatory coaches meeting will be held in the week leading up to Championship Weekend, division by division and by championship tier/site, to ensure home/away coin flips occur. It will be scheduled by LLA via an online meeting service.

Any revenue from operating a tournament or championship (concessions, 50/50 draws, raffles, programs, etc.) shall be retained by the host to cover expenses over the funding received from Little League Alberta. Should revenue and funding not cover costs, the host league and/or district assumes that liability.

Schedules are subject to change after release should teams drop out of events or request and pay the fee for changes for other reasons.

a. Site requests: due to the desire to have teams play against different teams, requests to play at certain sites will not be permitted, where possible.

6. Championships

a. Eligibility

i. Team eligibility: all Little League Alberta registered teams MUST compete in a minimum of 4 total weekends to be eligible for Championship Weekend (exemptions for approved alternative events, approved prior to July 1, 2027). All Saskatchewan Little League registered teams must compete in a minimum of 2 total weekends in Alberta-based events and a minimum of 1 approved Saskatchewan event (pre-approved no later than July 1, 2027).

ii. Western Frontier Baseball / Western Bracket teenage teams eligibility:

  • Intermediate/Junior Prep divisional teams may participate in the Teenage Juniors Division after WFB play and/or Western Bracket regional play if eliminated from the Little League World Series tournament path. Eligible for Championship Weekend.
  • Juniors divisional teams may participate in the Teenage Senior Division after the WFB Juniors Sectional Championship if eliminated from the Little League World Series tournament path. Eligible for Championship Weekend.
  • Seniors divisional teams may participate in the Teenage Senior Division after the Alberta Seniors Sectional Championship if eliminated from the Little League World Series tournament path. Not eligible for Championship Weekend.

Exception: WFB teams which are a league’s 2nd team in a division may enter the level of play they are playing and participate in the respective championship.

iii. Event cancellation exemptions: if teams are scheduled to play in a rainout weekend, that weekend will count toward team eligibility.

iv. Player eligibility: to be eligible for Championship Weekend, each player on the championship roster must have played in a minimum of eight (8) games over the Summer Travel Ball league schedule. If inclement weather affects play, players receive credit for any scheduled games that were cancelled. Roster confirmation is updated after each weekend by tournament hosts, determined by submitted score sheets. Playing an ineligible player in Championship Weekend results in forfeiture of games and a $1,000 fine to the association.

b. Championship tiering policy: Little League Alberta will make best efforts to tier each Championship Weekend for all divisions with greater than 8 teams. Additional host sites for different championship tiers are solely at the discretion of Little League Alberta. Tiering confirmations/decisions will be announced no later than the Tuesday after Week 4.

Summer Travel Baseball — 2027 Rules of Play

The current Tournament Little League Rule Book shall be used for all Summer Travel Baseball games, with the clarifications below.

1. Safety and Zero Tolerance Policy

The revised Little League Alberta Safety and Zero Tolerance Policy is in effect for all divisional and Summer Travel Baseball events, and will be followed for any infractions. The Little League Alberta Zero Tolerance Policy and Disciplinary Action Policy are in effect and must be adhered to by all participants to avoid disciplinary action.

2. Game Coordinators

All hosts of divisional tournaments and Summer Travel Ball tournaments must abide by the Game Coordination policy as approved by the Little League Alberta Board of Directors for all events. Failure to have a game coordinator available for any game where both umpires are non-adult will result in the game being removed from the results, and the host organization shall be fined up to $250 per occurrence.

3. Pitching Rules

Pitching rules will be as per the 2027 Little League Rule Book (tournament rules). Access the Little League Alberta recommended pitch count sheets via the Summer Travel Baseball Google Drive. Tournament hosts may impose suspensions for violations of the pitch count rules as required. All suspensions must be reported via email to info@llabsummerball.ca. Any incident found after the conclusion of your tournament, or any suspension taking place following your hosted event, must be reported to info@llabsummerball.ca to ensure the suspension is properly enacted.

4. Mandatory Play / All Bat

The all-bat rule and mandatory play will be as per the 2027 Little League Rule Book for all age group divisions. While standings are kept for the round robin weekends, fair play is encouraged as players learn the game (tournament rules).

5. Coaches Attire

Coaches should be dressed in matching team cap, shirt (preferably collared), slacks or dress shorts (all coaches wearing similar styles and colors), and closed-toe shoes. Coaches should not wear track pants and/or sandals on the playing field.

6. Coaches

Once within the field of play, 15 minutes prior to game time and throughout the game, only the 3 coaches listed on the team’s affidavit are to be with the team, in the dugout or on the playing field area. No parent helpers. Five (5) minutes prior to game time is reserved for the ground crew, the manager/umpire conference and player introductions. Allowing an infield warm-up is solely at the host’s discretion.

7. Equipment

Equipment is all per the 2027 Little League Rule Book, including bats. For the teenage division, the player’s age determines which bat is used: age 15–16 may only use a senior approved bat; age 14 only a junior approved bat; age 13 only an intermediate or junior approved bat. Coaches and umpires are asked to monitor this to ensure compliance.

Catchers gear: helmet MUST be a hockey-style mask with dangling throat guard. Any use of a 2-piece skull cap in warm-ups or games will result in the automatic ejection of the player and coach, including the next game, in accordance with Little League rules around ejections.

Teams are encouraged to have both a HOME and AWAY jersey. Both jerseys should have the same number for each player; if it differs you MUST declare it on the roster submission form for your division.

8. Time Limit

There is a time limit for each game, with no new inning starting after the time noted below. Game time is noted as the first pitch received. New innings start immediately after the 3rd out of the bottom of an inning.

  • Minors — no new inning after 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Majors — no new inning after 2 hours
  • Teenage — no new inning after 2 hours

9. Run Rules / Open Inning

Minors: the side is retired when three offensive players are legally put out, called out by an umpire, or when the offensive team scores five (5) runs — except the sixth (6th) inning, where no run limit is enforced.

Major/Teenage: the side is retired when three offensive players are put out, called out by an umpire, or when the offensive team scores six (6) runs — except the sixth (6th) inning for Majors or seventh (7th) inning for Teenage (Junior and Senior), where no run limit is enforced.

Note: this does not apply to divisional tournaments, where there is no time limit.

A ten-run and fifteen-run rule will be in effect as per Tournament Rule 12 for all divisional and Summer Ball games.

10. Coin Toss (Home/Away Determination)

Regular season weekends (Weeks 1–6): hosts divide up home and away to ensure all teams have an equal amount of each in the schedule. Dugouts may be assigned by the host to facilitate logistics; if not assigned, dugouts are first-come, first-served.

Championship Weekend: coin tosses for all games in the playoff round, or games in round robin if uneven number of games per team.

11. Score Sheets, Pitch Count Sheets and Line-Up Cards

All official score sheets, pitch count sheets and line-up cards must include a player’s full name (first and last) and jersey number. All pitch count sheets must also include a player’s league age to ensure proper pitch limits are applied. Failure to include full name and jersey number could result in a coach/manager suspension.

Any player not regularly playing with your team and using a regular player’s number/jersey MUST be clearly indicated as an affiliate player on both the score sheet and line-up cards.

Where two (2) non-adult aged umpires are involved in a game, the game coordinator’s name must be clearly marked on the official game sheet and the line-up cards.
