If a child may be at risk

In an emergency, call 911. Report suspected child abuse to Alberta Child Intervention — do not wait for internal review: 1-800-387-5437.

The external report comes first, even when another complaint route also applies.

If you have a concern

One concern may trigger three different routes. Choose the one that fits — and when a child may be at risk, the external report always comes first.

01

Safety + Law

Immediate danger or child welfare risk. Call 911 when urgent. Report suspected child abuse to Alberta Child Intervention — do not wait for internal review.

02

Independent path

Serious sport maltreatment. Alberta’s Safe Sport Complaint Mechanism (ABSSCM) is independent: reports are received and case-managed by ALIAS, not by the sport organization. You can report anonymously, 24/7.

Report online · 1-855-603-0483

03

Local policy

Conduct or operational complaints. League matters — coaching, playing time, fees, scheduling — go through your league’s complaint process (District Administrator and Safety Officer). Matters run by Little League Alberta, such as Summer Ball or championship events, use the LLA Complaint Form & Process.

What happens after you report

Report

Use the ABSSCM reporting link or call 1-855-603-0483. You may report anonymously.

Independent intake

ALIAS receives the report and creates a secure case file. You’ll receive a username and password to access your file and monitor progress.

First contact

You’ll hear back from the independent provider within about 48 working hours.

Screening

A case manager assesses immediate safety, jurisdiction and any accommodations you need. Whether the issue falls within the mechanism usually takes about 10 business days.

Resolution path

You’re guided to informal supports or a formal process, told what to expect next, and — where applicable — informed of the outcome and any appeal options.

Covered by the mechanism (maltreatment)

  • Physical or psychological abuse
  • Sexual misconduct or harassment
  • Discrimination, neglect or boundary violations
  • Grooming, hazing or retaliation
  • Safe Sport policy violations by rostered coaches

Handled locally (not maltreatment)

  • Association or club disputes, including playing time or coaching styles
  • Team selection appeals or tryouts
  • Technical rule violations, officiating or scheduling
  • Fee or refund issues and facility complaints
  • Basic injuries

Duty to report

Everyone in sport has a responsibility to report serious misconduct. Adults who become aware of maltreatment against a minor must report all situations of sexual or physical abuse or other serious harm committed against a minor, regardless of who the alleged perpetrator is — this duty exists regardless of other actions taken. Any sexual abuse or violence against any person by someone involved in the sport community must also be reported, as must other serious misconduct that deliberately harms or endangers participants.
